PCVITA software to recover Outlook cached contacts from NK2 and DAT files
Outlook Cache Contact Recovery Tool
PCVITA Outlook Cached Contacts Recovery Tool recovers autocomplete contacts from NK2 files of Outlook 2007 and below and from DAT files of later Outlook versions. Cache contact recovery software loads the file for you, previews every name and email address and saves them to a new or existing PST file, vCard, CSV, Google CSV, PDF, MSG, HTML or DAT. Free demo exports 15 contacts per file.

Step 1. Open the Recovery Tool
Install the tool on Windows and open it from the Start Menu to reach the main screen.

Step 6. Choose the Format and Save
Select New PST, Existing PST, vCard, CSV, Google CSV, PDF, MSG, HTML or DAT, set the destination and press Export. Press OK at the completion prompt, then open the destination folder to see your contact files.

Why Outlook Cached Contacts Need a Recovery Tool
Four facts from Microsoft about the autocomplete list and what PCVITA cache contact recovery does with them.
- 1
Outlook 2007 Keeps the List in an NK2 File
Microsoft documents that Outlook 2007 stores the autocomplete stream in a file named after the profile with the .nk2 extension. PCVITA tool opens that NK2 file and shows every name.
- 2
Outlook 2010 and 2013 Hide It in the Mailbox
Later versions get the list from a hidden message called IPM.Configuration.Autocomplete in the Inbox of the delivery store. Your contacts sit in that stream, not in the Contacts folder.
- 3
The DAT File is a Local Cache
Outlook 2010 and 2013 can cache the list in an autocomplete .dat file under RoamCache. PCVITA tool loads DAT files from that folder or finds them for you.
- 4
Outlook Saves the List Only on Shutdown
Outlook keeps the list in memory and saves the structure when it closes. Close Outlook before you load or change a cache file, so your recovered contacts match the latest saved list.
Prepare Before You Recover Cached Contacts
Six checks before your first recovery. Work down the list, then open the tool.
- Close Outlook before you load a cache file. Microsoft notes that Outlook can overwrite a changed autocomplete stream when it shuts down.
- Copy your cache file to a safe folder before you export into an existing PST or DAT file.
- Know where the file sits or let auto detect find it. Folder paths for both file types are in the file locations box below.
- Install and configure Microsoft Outlook on the machine. PCVITA tool needs a properly configured Outlook installation.
- Check your Windows machine for 100 MB free disk space and 2 GB RAM.
- Test the free demo on your file before you buy. Download the Outlook Cached Contacts Recovery demo, preview your contacts and export 15 items per file.
System lines match the Specifications table below. File locations follow the Microsoft page linked in the Sources.

Where Outlook Keeps the Autocomplete List
- Outlook 2007 saves the list in a .nk2 file named after the profile, in %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook.
- Outlook 2010 and 2013 get the list from the hidden message IPM.Configuration.Autocomplete in the Inbox of the delivery store.
- Outlook can keep a local .dat copy of that list in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\RoamCache. Microsoft calls it a cache only.
- Outlook saves the list when it shuts down, so close Outlook before you load the file.
- Use the auto detect option in PCVITA tool when you cannot find the file yourself.

Working and exports How the tool behaves during the recovery
How does the Outlook cached contacts recovery tool work?
Six steps recover cached contacts from your cache file.
- Step 1. Open PCVITA cache contact recovery from the Start Menu.
- Step 2. Press Add File and select Add Files or Add Folder.
- Step 3. Select Auto detect storage location if you do not know the folder.
- Step 4. Preview the recovered contacts in the preview pane.
- Step 5. Press Export or tick contacts and press Export Selected.

Where is the NK2 file for Outlook cached contacts?
Outlook 2007 keeps it in %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook. Microsoft documents that the file carries the profile name with the .nk2 extension. Later Outlook versions use a hidden mailbox message and a DAT cache in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\RoamCache. PCVITA tool finds the file for you with its auto detect option.
What is the difference between an NK2 file and a DAT file?
Your Outlook version decides. Outlook 2007 and below create an NK2 file for cached contacts. Later versions create a DAT file. PCVITA cache contact recovery loads both file types and previews them the same way.
Can the tool recover contacts from a corrupt or deleted NK2 file?
Yes. PCVITA tool recovers contacts from NK2 files that are deleted or corrupt and saves them to PST and other formats. Add the file with Add File or let Auto detect storage location add it.
How do I export Outlook contacts to Excel or CSV?
Save them as a CSV file and open that file in Excel. For your Contacts folder, Microsoft describes File, Open & Export, Import/Export, Export to a file, Comma Separated Values. For autocomplete contacts, load your cache file in PCVITA tool, select CSV, set the destination and press Export.
How do I export Outlook contacts to vCard?
Select vCard as the export format. PCVITA software saves recovered cached contacts as vCard version 2.1, 3.0 or 4.0 from the vCard settings. Contacts stored in a PST file need the Outlook to vCard Export Tool instead.
Can I preview and select cached contacts before saving?
Yes. Preview pane lists every recovered contact. Sort it by Display Name, Nickname or email address. Tick the contacts you want and press Export Selected to save only those.
How do I add recovered cached contacts back to Outlook?
Export them to PST. Select PST and tick Export into Default Contacts Folder or select the Existing PST option to add the contacts to a PST file you already use. Press Export, then press OK at the completion prompt.
