Why Large PST Files Need Splitting
Four points from Microsoft Learn and the answer PCVITA gives to every point.
- 1
Outlook Sets a Default Size Limit
Microsoft Learn lists 50 GB as the default Unicode PST limit for Outlook 2016, 2013 and 2010 and 20 GB for Outlook 2007 and 2003. PCVITA Outlook Split PST File Tool cuts a large file into parts from 1 MB to 1 TB, so no part crowds that limit.
- 2
Warning Size Triggers Compaction
Microsoft says Outlook starts compaction when a file reaches its warning size and then blocks sending mail stored in Sent Items. Copying and moving items inside the file stops too. PCVITA divides the data into smaller files before the file gets that big.
- 3
Archive Files Hit the Limit Too
Microsoft states that Auto-Archive fails for an archive file that reaches the limit. PCVITA splits an archive PST by year or date range, so older years move into files of their own.
- 4
ANSI Files Stop Near 2 GB
Microsoft lists 1.933 GB as the default ANSI limit against 50 GB for Unicode files in newer Outlook versions. PCVITA names Outlook 2021 and all earlier versions among the supported PST sources.
Prepare Your PST Files Before You Split
Seven checks to finish before the first split. Mark them off as you go.
- Back up the original PST file to another drive, so your source data stays untouched.
- Gather your PST files in one folder or note the drive that holds them for the Search Files option.
- Choose the split mode. Size makes equal parts. Date and Year build archives. Folder, Email ID and Category sort the data.
- Decide the value. Note the part size, the date ranges or the From and To years before you start.
- Select a destination folder on a drive with free space for the new PST files.
- Confirm .NET Framework 4.5 or above plus 100 MB of disk space on your PC.
- Test the free demo first. Download the PST split demo, split one file and check the result. The demo covers the first 50 items.
