Why Compact and Repair is Not Enough for a Corrupt Access File
Four limits that Microsoft documents for Access and what PCVITA MDB converter does instead.
- 1
Repair Can Cut Off Table Data
Microsoft warns that Access can truncate some data from tables that are damaged and advises a backup before you repair. PCVITA MDB converter leaves the original file unaltered and exports the recovered data to a new place.
- 2
Partial Repairs Leave Objects Behind
When a repair only partly works, Access lists the objects it could not fix in a system table named MSysCompactErrors. PCVITA tool recovers objects and table data from the damaged file and shows them in a preview.
- 3
ACCDB Files Need Access 2007 or Later
Microsoft states that an .accdb database cannot be opened or linked by versions earlier than Access 2007. PCVITA converter exports to Excel, CSV and SQL Server as well, so old Access versions stop being a barrier.
- 4
Save As Has Version Gaps
Access 97 databases cannot convert directly from Access 2013 onward, so Microsoft routes them through Access 2003 first. PCVITA MDB converter loads older MDB files with Browse and recovers them in one session.
Prepare Before Using the MDB Converter
Six checks before the first conversion. Tick them off, then open the software.
- Keep a copy of the damaged database file. Microsoft recommends a backup before any repair.
- Install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 or above on a Windows machine with 100 MB free disk space and 4 GB RAM.
- Open the software with Run as Administrator on Windows 11 (64 bit), 10, 8.1, 8 and 7.
- Choose the output format. MS Access, Excel and CSV need a destination folder with enough space.
- Collect SQL Server details for a database migration. You need the server name, the authentication details and a name for the new database.
- Test the free demo on your file before you buy. Download the Access MDB Converter demo and preview the recovered tables.
System lines match the Specifications table below and the backup line follows the Microsoft page linked in the Sources.

Access File Format Check Before You Blame Corruption
- Access 2003, 2002, 2000 and 97 databases convert to .accdb when you open them in a newer Access and use Save As.
- Versions earlier than Access 2007 cannot open or link an .accdb database.
- Sharing with Access 2003 users or using replication or user level security, needs the .mdb format.
- Access 97 databases cannot convert directly from Access 2013 onward.
- Files that open in no Access version need recovery, not another Save As.
Open the Software Guide for the export screens that save recovered data in the format your Access version accepts.
