Convert OST to PST in 6 Steps
Six screens take one OST file from the first click to the PST export. Select a step to view its screen. Software Guide holds the settings of every other format.
Step 1. Open the Software and Click Add File
Install the software on Windows. Installer languages go from English and French to Japanese and Thai, 20 in all. Open the main screen and select Add File.
Step 2. Select or Search the OST File
Choose Select File and browse to the OST file or to the Outlook.bak file that ScanOST created, then click Open. Your path shows in the text box. Choose Search File with Search Selected Drive or Search All Drives to list the OST and BAK files found.
Step 3. Choose the Scan Mode
Select Quick for a faster scan. Select Advance for a highly corrupted OST file, a deep scan that works on 64 bit Windows. If the emails are encrypted, the encryption screen before this one takes an S/MIME certificate or an OpenPGP key. Click Add.
Step 4. Scan the File and Preview the Items
When the scan completes, a dialog appears. Click Yes to keep the scan report. Left panel lists folders with data in bold and marks deleted items in red. Open an email in Normal Mail, Hex, Properties, Message Header, MIME, HTML, RTF or Attachments view.
Step 5. Click Export and Select PST
Click Export for every item or Export Selected for the ticked ones. Select PST from the list of export formats.
Step 6. Set the PST Options and Export
Open the PST advanced settings to split the PST, set a date filter or select folders. Browse to the destination folder and click Export. Progress shows on screen and a report lists the result. Save the report as CSV for your records.

Microsoft Treats the OST File as a Server Copy
Microsoft says OST files are always copies of items saved on a mail server. You can create a new copy at any time, so Outlook rebuilds the file from the server and never hands you a PST. PCVITA software turns the file you hold today into a PST.

What to Check Before You Convert an OST File
- Data Files tab in Outlook Account Settings shows OST and PST files with their accounts. Note the path of the OST file you need.
- Microsoft calls the OST file a copy of server items. If the mailbox is still live, Outlook can create a new copy at any time.
- Mail saved locally and not yet synced lives only in your OST file. Convert it first before anyone deletes or rebuilds that file.
- Copy the file first and convert the copy. You keep the original as your fallback.
- Open the finished PST in classic Outlook. Microsoft says new Outlook cannot import a mailbox or calendar from a PST file.
